Centre for Alternative Technology
Based near Machynlleth (about a forty minute drive from the barn), this visitors centre is worth a trip, especially with older children. A water-balanced cliffside railway transports visitors from car parking up to the main centre, where a wide range of interactive exhibits is waiting to be explored. The centre is also a working educational centre rather than just a tourist attraction, a 'living laboratory' showcasing the latest in environmental energy technologies.
Machynlleth itself is well-worth stopping to peruse the shops and cafes. CAT run a small cafe on the town's main high street.
